Title: White Sand Forest
Size: 13" h x 8.5" w x 8.5" d
Medium: Glass, sand, acrylic, resin, cement, wood, wasabi powder
Price: 159.00

I dream of traveling someday.  Until then, I just look at pictures of exotic destinations around the world and fantasize.  I found some locations in Northern Peru that are stunningly beautiful with white sand beaches and forests together in one view.  This is what I'd hoped to capture in this piece.  Pictured here, the cube is illuminated to show the detail of the "forest" area, giving an abstract impression of leaves with light streaming through from the treetops.  The bottom area is created with real sand.  The best location for this cube is in front of a window where it illuminates with natural light.  At night, it looks good with battery-operated lights to make a one-of-a-kind night light.

Oil on Canvas

11 x 14

In a previous blog, I mentioned that my daughter has become a better oil painter than me.  This post is in honor of Abbey.  She painted this after coming home from her honeymoon in Thailand, where she rode elephants (and did other fun things).  She and her husband took a lot of pictures and this was painted from one of the pics.  She was only 18 when this was painted.  Kudos to you Abbey!

Title: Both Depart at the End of the Day
Medium: Acrylic & paper on canvas
Size: 18 x 24
Price: 79.00

The intention behind this painting is to depict the transitory nature of space and time.  The 'sails' of both of the 'boats' are comprised of pieces of a calendar and a map.  My question is: are space and time constructs that exist only in this mortal world?  Can we really know the answer to that question while we're here?

Title: Rectangle Structure II
Medium: Cement, resin, stone, metal, acrylic, wood
Size: 28.5" h x 4.75" w x 4.75" d
Price: 129.00

I had so much fun creating the first RS, I just had to do another one!  There is a lot of diversity in this piece - not even two of the small rectangles are the same.

Title: Earth's Sister
Medium: Oil on paper
Size: 17 x 23
Price: E-mail
Original Framed
11 x 14 Limited Edition Prints available: 19.00
Matted: 39.00
Matted & Framed: 119.00

This painting was inspired by a dream I had one night.  I was riding in a car down that road with a couple of friends and, of all people, Gandhi.  We were all joking around and laughing together.  I remember looking through the windshield at the earth and the (mystery) orb in the sky.  I was awed at the beauty of the earth in front of us and wondered what the other orb was.  It looked too large to be our moon so I suspected that the earth had a sister planet that we had never known about.

Title: Row of White Flowers
Medium: Flowers, resin, acrylic, cement
Size: 7 x 7
Price: sold

I love flowers & gardens.  The saddest part of flowers is that we have to watch something so beautiful die when it's plucked from the ground, or when Summer turns to Fall.  In the fall, I picked some of my favorites, dried them in a way so as to preserve their true color, and cast them in resin.  In this piece, the flowers actually stand out about 1/2 inch from the background and can be moved back, forth, up, or down slightly.  I love the preservation of the beauty of summer through the winter.

Title: Rectangle Structure I
Medium: Cement, resin, stone, metal, acrylic
Size: 18.5" h x 4.75" w x 4.75" d
Price: 180.00

Sold at private showing 2011

This piece was my first experimentation with building a structure out of cement and resin (I believe I found the perfect recipe!). It was so much fun to create each unique piece, then build it into the structure for the overall effect.  As I created this, I wanted to be able to make a cube structure, but didn't yet know how... that was soon to come though!

Title: 150 Umbrellas
Medium: Resin, stain, glass, acrylic
Size: 30 x 30
Price: 849.00

I enjoy this piece in person, but not as much photographed.  Each of the "umbrellas" is a half-orb (well, not quite half) that is permanently attached to the silver background.  I was hoping for more of the colors to reflect onto the background to help complete the work, but there's just not a lot of reflecting going on at all.  I'm thinking about getting out my paintbrush and modifying both the dark silver & light silver backgrounds.  Any votes to leave it as-is or get crazy?

Title: Flowers in the Stream
Medium: Cement, stone, resin, paintbrushes, flowers
Size: 11" h x 6" w
Price: 32.00

Sold at Positive Space in Lava Hot Springs ID

With the creation of this piece, I imagined a sweet story of a lover waiting for his love interest with flowers to give.  Some of the petals and a couple of the flowers have 'fallen' into the water below.  To finish off the sweet story, not having ever shared the story behind the piece with anyone before writing it today, it was purchased in ID by a young man who wanted to give it to his girlfriend.  He put it on layaway until he could buy it completely.  Perfect!!

Moon Phases

Title: Moon Phases Cube
Medium: Cement, wood, leaves, resin, stain
Size: 16.5" square
Price: 135.00

This cube was shown on Channel 2 in 2009.  I was so nervous and probably looked pretty foolish.  I'm more of a hide-in-my-home-and-just-do-art kind of person.  I should show more sides of this cube on this blog - there are three different types of panels, with opposite sides matching (essentially, but each moon is different), so it can be turned for different effects & color schemes. While in the Channel 2 studios, I noticed the lighting was so bright, it would make for a good photo op :)

Untitled
Medium: Oil on paper
Size: 12 x 18
Price: 125.
Framed
Sold at fundraiser event Oct 23, 2010

With this piece, I was going for excitement and calm at the same time (why not?!?).  I could be wrong, but I think I pulled it off.  The colors and lines to me are exciting, but the balance and harmony, particularly around the perimeter, say "calm".  What do you think?  I think I want to paint a couple more...

Title: Resting
Medium: Charcoal, Conte Crayon on paper
Size: 16 x 20
Price: 145.
Framed

The shading in this drawing is accentuated with scriptures from the Bible, and the scriptures are placed in key locations that go with the meaning(s) of the verses.  For instance, on the hand, the verses talk about taking action, or doing, on the head, about thinking or understanding.  It was an enlightening project that kept me searching and reading.  Maybe there is a "scripture map" hidden somewhere...

Tilted Landscape

Title: Tilted Landscape
Medium: Resin, ink, stone, cement, glass, coffee
Size: 11''h x 8''w x 7''d
Price: 125.
Sold at fundraiser event Oct 23, 2010

This was the first form I made out of resin and a diversity of other elements.  I learned to never cast resin in a Styrofoam mold again!  Maybe other people would know to not do that, but I didn't (it was really all I had available at the time), and it took me HOURS to scrape off and detail the back of that form, finally to perfection.  I then had to re-treat the back just to make sure it was awesome!  It was fun, though, and I was happy knowing there were coffee grounds in it :)

Breaking Free Lamp

Title: Breaking Free Lamp
Medium: paper, ink, wood, stone, leaves
Size: 18''h x 5.5''w x 5.5''d
Price: 125.

The intention behind this work is to celebrate the beauty of breaking free of boundaries and reaching toward new heights. The box-like structure had been containing a small tree, but the tree would not be contained. There isn't really a tree in there - they are real branches (dried), however, and real leaves (also dried), along with some artsy leaves that match the box design just for kicks (and art).

Fence and Moon

Title: Fence and Moon
Medium: Oil and wood
Size: 8 x 10
Original Framed
Price: 125.00

8x10 Limited Edition Prints available
Unframed: 10.00
Matted: 16.00
Matted & Framed: 28.00

I started this painting while teaching an art class for kids. I was showing them how to create different spaces on board, then plan out color schemes and blend between areas to achieve diversity within a unified framework. I love teaching kids and miss that activity.  One of my former students, who happens to be my daughter, took additional classes while growing up and is now a better oil painter than I am - yea!! (I say that genuinely, not sarcastically).  I was going for an oriental feel with this one and liked the real-wood 'fence' that seems as if it can double as oriental script in an abstract sort of way.

Early Spring

Title: Early Spring
Medium: Paper, wood, metal, acrylic
Size: 18 x 24
Framed
Price: 165.00

I have to give due credit to Idaho for this piece (which looks A LOT better in-person than we were able to capture through the camera!).  Driving through Idaho inspired the rustic serenity in earth tones.  Seeing this work brings back fond memories for me of Lava Hot Springs and helps me take a refreshing breath in the midst of a normal, chaotic lifestyle.  The background stands out from the black base -it's hard to see in the photo, but there's a layer of light yellow behind, then the green paper stands out from the yellow for a 3D effect.  When the light shines in on this one, and moves across throughout the day, it makes shadows inside the circles and the green (which has a shimmer to it) lights up beautifully.

Metal Suns Cube

Title: Metal Suns Cube
Medium: Stone, metal, metal powder, paper, stain, resin
Size: 16.5" square
Price: 165.00

Here's another tribute to the Orient, with the goal of integrating an oriental flair and the sun.  Each side has a different style of an art-deco sun made out of various forms of metal.  This one just sold recently as a birthday gift.  I hope she is enjoying it! (I heard she wanted to get some new furniture to match the color-scheme - great idea!)

Fire Cube

Title: Fire Cube
Medium: Resin, ink, metal powder
Size: 10'' square
Price: 65.00

I could make this one all over again!  This was one of the most enjoyable cubes to create.  Acrylics in red, orange, and yellow along with gold metal powder ... and a tiny bit of copper metal powder, helped to create an impression of fire. I loved immersing myself in the colors while I mixed and formed them (I also tried out a new technique to make interesting impressions in the individual rectangles that formed some very cool designs).  It's one of the smaller cubes, but it has a big personality!

Kite Tail Cube

Title: Kite Tail Cube
Medium: Resin, glass, stain, shell, acrylic
Size: 13'' square
Price: 115.00
Solid Granite base is included
Please ignore the pic in the background
(I'm not very good at cropping!)

One of my fondest childhood memories is of flying kites.  I'd be mesmerized as I watched them duck and soar with the tides of the wind.  I wanted to capture that whimsy in a piece of artwork and, hence, "Kite Tail" was born.  In the top picture, you are seeing the very end of the kite tail. The tail can be traced through each side of the cube until you reach the other end. The bottom picture didn't turn out very well (because I took it myself), but it shows a few of the other sides.  Can you see the hint of clouds in the sky?

Title: Portal
Medium: Stone, resin, stain
Size: 10.5''h x 6''w x 1''d
Price: 95.
Sold at Art Works Gallery in Lava Hot Springs ID

I believe I may have seen too many Stargate movies and other deep space type shows.  I love them though, and I love the idea of portals that can transport us quickly to other realms where we can discover new territories.  What a fantasy!  Maybe someday on our lunch breaks, we can really hit the road for something new for lunch!  Has anyone seen the movie Contact?  I liked the book more, but could watch the scene where Ellie takes the portal trip again and again!  This piece didn't do justice in the least bit, but the idea is there...
